The first days of class are the most important of the semester. During this time, the instructor and the students meet and begin getting to know one another. The instructor lays out their expectations and requirements for the course while developing an environment that is conducive to learning. The instructor learns about the unique students in their class, while the students learn how they can be successful in the class, as well as the students learning how they can be successful in the class.
