The Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the scholarly (research) approach to investigating teaching strategies or solving teaching “problems.” The instructor becomes the researcher and examines his or her practice and student learning to improve both. As with all scholarship, it is public, intended to be shared with the scholarly community, and is therefore open to critical review. There is a difference between scholarly teaching and the scholarship of teaching and learning. Scholarly teaching is about using research about teaching and learning to implement best practices. SoTL is about examining teaching and learning to contribute to the research. It is the difference between consuming (scholarly teaching) and creating/contributing (SoTL). Both are important practices in the life of an academic, particularly at a university that values teaching.
