Student Sense of Belonging

Posted by CTLE Team on Feb 17, 2022

In both the higher education literature and in the AIR Office’s own empirical analyses, college students’ sense of belonging has been shown to be critically important to student success. Yet, we know very little about how the college environment—the programs, services, people, and practices, that connect students to the institution—shape students’ social integration. Join us on Wednesday 2/23 at 12:00 PM for the next installation of our spring webinar series as we tackle this issue.

Recent studies suggest that students’ perceptions of the quality of their connection points to the college environment are as important as the number of connection points. Using the Culturally Engaging Campus Environment (CECE) Model, proposed by Museus (2014), we examined how sense of belonging is shaped by the college environment that we, as faculty and staff, co-create at Saint Leo.

In this webinar, Will Hamilton and Daniel Duerr provide a short summary of the relevant literature, present the findings from their recent empirical investigation, and then lay out several recommendations for practice from the higher education scholarship.
