EVALUATION: will be based on the possibility of accumulating 100 points in the course. THE GRADE SCALE WILL BE: A = 93, A- = 90, B+ = 87, B = 83, B- = 80, C+ = 77, C= 73, C- = 70, D+ 67, D = 63
1. ATTENDANCE 25 points In-class experiences and communication are THE critical elements of the course work for PHI 335. Attendance is crucial. Only full participation and the successful completion of the other requirements stated here can ensure a satisfactory grade in the course, and you cannot participate without attending. I will record absences as follows, beginning at 6:20 the second class meeting, and at 6:00 for all subsequent meetings. Each class will meet for 180 minutes (from 6:00 p.m. until approximately 9:00 p.m) or 9 "units" of 20 minutes each. I will count absences in terms of units or parts of units missed. The effect on grades will be: 0 units missed = 30 points (including five-point bonus) 1 unit missed = 25.00 [100%] 2 units missed = 24.50 3 units missed = 24.00 4 units missed = 23.75 5 units missed = 23.50 6 units missed = 23.25 7 units missed = 23.00 8 units missed = 22.75 9 units missed = 22.50 [90%] (Nine units equal one full class.) 10 units missed = 20.00 [80%] 11 units missed = 19.50 12 units missed = 19.00 13 units missed = 18.75 14 units missed = 18.50 15 units missed = 18.25 16 units missed = 18.00 17 units missed = 17.75 18 units missed = 17.50 [70%] (Eighteen units equal two full classes.)
20 units missed = 11.00 21 units missed = 9.50 22 units missed = 8.00 23 units missed = 6.50 24 units missed = 5.00 25 units missed = 3.50 26 units missed = 2.00 27 units missed = 0.00 (Twenty-seven units equal three full classes.) THERE ARE NO "EXCUSED ABSENCES" IN THIS CLASS. PARAMETER: I get results (not reasons). SEE GROUND RULES FOR CLARIFICATION.
2. PARTICIPATION 25 POINTS includes A. Being obviously awake, attentive, and tuned-in. While you might possibly be alert and aware, yet appear to be asleep (e.g., head down, lying on desk, and/or eyes closed, etc.) that is fairly unusual and, at any rate, will not be my interpretation in this course. B. Keeping all the general ground rules, with particular emphasis on: i. Class attendance and being on time. ii. Avoiding Side Shows and Negos (See Ground Rules #17 & 18.) iii. Sharing your thoughts, feelings, and observations in a truthful and kind manner. iv. Acknowledging others for their participation. (See Ground Rules #15.) C. Being involved in, and keeping the specific ground rules for, each discussion or exercise in class, with particular emphasis on progress reports, which will be explained in class. D. Bringing your most mature attitude. If you question your ability to comply with this requirement, your enrollment in PHI 335 is not appropriate, and that will be my overriding consideration in determining your participation grade for the course. I will include all exercises and discussions in the participation grade. PARTICIPATION IS CUMULATIVE; IT BEGINS THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. PARTICIPATION SCORES: A+ = 25, A = 22.5, B+ = 21.25, B = 20, C+ = 18.75, C = 17.5 [I do not expect to award a participation score of less than a C. In general, participation scores do not reduce the grade a student has earned in the other evaluation procedures: final, attendance, agreements, and writing.]
3. FINAL EXAMINATION 40 POINTS The Final Examination will consist of at least 100 machine-graded questions covering the content of the readings. To take the final, you will need a soft lead (#2) pencil to mark a Scantron answer sheet. The grades on the final will not be scaled. The final examination will be scheduled for a time (or a series of times) following the last class meeting.
4. RELATIONSHIP AGREEMENTS, required for B or higher grade 5 POINTS If you want to achieve a grade of B or higher in PHI 335, choose an agreement partner (exactly one, no more), who need not be enrolled in the course, and write a set of Relationship Agreements. Make the Agreements operational, verifiable, and controllable as these terms are explained in your text (Williams & Levine, Chapter 18). To be considered complete, the Agreements must cover at least five separate areas of concern to you and your agreement partner, and they must be creative in that they go beyond the Sample Agreements I give you in class. For additional guidelines, see the section below, "writing for PHI 335." If you choose not to complete the Relationship Agreements, submit a signed statement of that decision or lose ANOTHER five points on your final grade.
5. FINAL PROGRESS REPORT (FPR), required for B+ or higher grade A. For A, A-, and B+ Grades 5 Points If you want to achieve a grade of B+ or higher in PHI 335, submit a five-to-seven-page (using 1½ line spacing, one-inch margins, and a 12-point font) Final Progress Report. A competent FPR will reflect your understanding of the course material. It could not have been written by someone who did not comprehend the class. Your FPR is not the history of your psychological development, and it is not a series of judgments about the way you played this game called the Philosophy of Love. It is an honest (no B.S.) assessment, with specific examples, of what you have created for yourself during your time in the course. For additional guidelines, see the section below, "writing for PHI 335." If you choose not to complete the FPR submit a signed statement of that decision or lose ANOTHER five points on your final grade. B. To Improve Grades 5 Points If you do not expect to achieve an A or B+ grade, you may still submit a FPR as described above. The FPR can raise your grade by as much as five points, but it will not lower your grade. If you choose not to submit the FPR turn in a signed statement of your decision not to submit it, or lose five points on your final grade.
I will grade your Relationship Agreement and Final Progress Report on content and style, including the basic mechanics of English. I will consider nothing short of thoughtful, well written, grammatically and typographically correct work, free of spelling errors, acceptable. To be considered "on time," submit your Relationship Agreement and Final Progress Report by the end of the final examination meeting. If either project is late, I will reduce its grade by one letter. I will not accept projects later than 12:00 noon, the day following the final examination. Use a word processor to type both projects. Always use responsible language, as explained in your text (Williams & Levine, Chapter 9) and in class. In writing from the point of view of personal responsibility, avoid passive voice. If you do not understand the difference between the active and passive voices, ask me to explain it after class. Give your Final Progress Report (FPR) a cover sheet a separate page containing nothing but the title, your name, and the date. Do not identify yourself by name anywhere else in the FPR. Do not use a cover sheet for your Relationship Agreements; simply put your name in the upper left-hand corner. If you make your Agreements with someone in PHI 335 this term, turn in only one copy and put both names on it. Staple your Agreement and FPR separately. (Do not staple them together.) Do not clip or tear them, do not put them in binders. Each violation of these requirements will result in the loss of one point on the assignment. Proofread your work. (Using a spell-checker isn't sufficient.) If you have any doubts about the adequacy of your writing, consult the writing center. Be scrupulously aware of plagiarism, which, according to the University Honor Code (attached), can lead to failure in the course. All course work must be submitted as hard copies. I will not accept any work submitted electronically.
1. See participation, above. PARTICIPATION IS CUMULATIVE; IT BEGINS THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. 2. Any class meeting may run later than 9:00. Although I will be aware of the time, I will not end class until we get to a satisfactory stopping place. This will rarely take longer than five or ten minutes, and I expect that class will usually end within a couple of minutes of 9:00. The following class meetings may run significantly later than the normal time: the First Class Meeting, Half Time, Full Time, and Last Class. They will continue until we finish the full agenda planned for that meeting. 3. Your attendance at Half Time and Full Time are especially important. Absences on those days count double. Anyone arriving more than five minutes late or leaving early during either Half Time or Full Time will be counted absent for the entire class. 4. To complete the Relationship Agreements, you will get to work with a partner, outside class, for a minimum of two hours. [See EVALUATION, item #4, above.]
