PHI 335 PHILOSOPHY OF LOVE GENERAL GROUND RULES FOR CLASS I offer you this agreement contract. Your options are: 1. Accept the Ground Rules in full to stay in class (say Yes), 2. Reject any of the Ground Rules and leave the class (say No), 3. Renegotiate the Ground Rules (make a counteroffer). (See Ground Rule #1). If you choose to stay in class, plan to participate fully. At the first meeting I will mention a number of important agreements and ground rules, but I will not tell you everything we are going to do in the course. Besides these General Ground Rules, some discussions and exercises will have their own specific ground rules and requirements, which I will explain at the appropriate time. I will not ask you to do anything illegal or immoral, but you may be asked to do something that is difficult for you, and at some point you may find yourself uncomfortable or resistant. You cannot participate fully, learn what the course has to offer, and achieve an acceptable grade without being willing to push past that resistance. PARTICIPATION IS CUMULATIVE; IT BEGINS THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. Please initial each ground rule to indicate that you understand it. 1. NEW GROUND RULES may be added, the existing ground rules changed, or the syllabus altered, by getting 100% agreement of all the people involved in the class. No ground rules will be renegotiated during the first class meeting. initial_______ 2. INITIATE INTERACTIONS WITH ME DURING CLASS, AFTER CLASS, OR BY PHONE, not before class (beginning at 2:30 P.M. on THE DAY OF THE CLASS) or during class breaks. On the day the class meets, STAY AT LEAST FIFTY FEET AWAY FROM OUR CLASSROOM BUILDING from 2:30 PM until 5:55 PM unless official academic business gives you a reason to be there. initial_______ 3. HONOR THE TIME OUT SIGNAL. (It is the same signal sports teams use to call "time out.") When any member of the coaching team gives it, stop talking and moving. initial_______ 4. ATTEND EVERY CLASS FOR THE FULL CLASS SESSION. BE ON TIME. BE SEATED WHEN CLASS BEGINS. DO NOT LEAVE EARLY. Class begins at 6:00 PM (Official U.S. Time: www.time.gov/timezone.cgi?Eastern/d/-5/java) and ends at approximately 9:00 PM. Exceptions: (A) First Class Meeting, (B) Half Time, (C) Full Time, and (D) Last Class (see Course Schedule for dates). These meetings will continue until we finish the full agenda. Absences at Half Time and Full Time count double. Anyone arriving more than five minutes late or leaving early during either Half Time or Full Time will be counted absent for the entire class. If you come late to any class, leave early, come back late from break, or leave during class, you are absent for the time you are gone. I will record absences according to the grading and attendance policies explained in the course syllabus. Parameter: I get results (not reasons). initial_______ NOTE: There are no excused absences in PHI 335, including those for "University Sponsored Activities" mentioned in the University's Academic Policy #AA2110.006. A copy of that policy is attached to these ground rules. By signing this agreement and remaining registered in this course, you waive your right to claim an "excused absence" under that policy. initial_______ 5. If you leave before the end of class, tell me, directly and in person, that you are leaving. IF IT IS AN IMMEDIATE EMERGENCY, ASK FOR HELP. If any coaching team member suspends class for an emergency, those helping with the emergency will not be counted absent. initial_______ 6. SIT AS REQUESTED AND STRAIGHTEN THE ROOM WHEN CLASS ENDS. I may ask you to sit in several arrangements during the term and sometimes during one class meeting. Your agreement to straighten the room has been completed when a member of the coaching staff certifies that it has. initial_______ 7. DO NOT EAT OR DRINK, CHEW GUM (OR ANYTHING ELSE), OR WEAR DARK GLASSES, HATS, OR OTHER FORMS OF HEAD-COVER IN THE CLASSROOM. DO NOT SMOKE OR USE ANY OTHER FORM OF TOBACCO IN THE BUILDING (NOT JUST IN THE CLASSROOM). initial_______ 8. DO NOT TAPE RECORD THE CLASS. initial_______ 9. THROW NO TRASH, DEBRIS, GARBAGE, OR LITTER ON THE GROUND OR ANYWHERE ELSE, except in the appropriate receptacles, on or off campus, for the entire term. THIS INCLUDES CIGARETTE BUTTS. DO NOT VANDALIZE, DAMAGE, DISFIGURE, MAR, OR DEFACE ANY PROPERTY ANYWHERE in any manner, including writing on desks and bathroom walls. initial_______ 10. DO NOT USE INTOXICANTS OR MIND-ALTERING SUBSTANCES BETWEEN 2:00 AM ON THE DAY OF OUR CLASS AND THE END OF THAT CLASS MEETING, including: alcohol, marijuana, cocaine or its derivatives, heroin or its derivatives, or other forms of amphetamines or tranquilizers not prescribed by your physician. (Note: I prefer, recommend, and advise that you never involve yourself with any of these substances.) initial_______ 11. BREAK POLICY. I will announce a ten-minute break approximately half-way through each class. At Half Time, Full Time, and Last Class, the break may be shorter. initial_______ 12. VISITOR POLICY. Maximum two visits per person, approved by everyone in class. No visitors during Half Time, Full Time, or Last Class. Previous graduates of PHI 335 may visit at any time except Half Time, Full Time, and Last Class. Policy does not apply to my supervisors, other instructors, assistants, colleagues, or trainees. initial_______ 13. WATCH THE EVENING (6:30 P.M.) NATIONAL NEWS ONCE A WEEK, (ABC, NBC, OR CBS). initial_______ 14. PARTICIPATE in every class discussion and exercise and complete every out-of-class assignment with the SPIRIT OF EXPERIMENTATION AND DISCOVERY. PARTICIPATION IS CUMULATIVE; IT BEGINS THE FIRST CLASS MEETING. initial_______ 15. ACKNOWLEDGE PEOPLE when they participate: (A) Acknowledge by clapping enthusiastically, but not necessarily for a long time. (B) Acknowledge without regard to quality; clap just because someone said something. (C) Always acknowledge yourself – your vote always counts. Do not acknowledge me or other members of the coaching team. initial_______ 16. BE TRUTHFUL AND KIND. Do not lie. Find the kindest possible way to speak the truth without compromising it – in and out of class. initial_______ 17. NO NEGOS. Withhold verbal and non-verbal forms of judgment and evaluation. Examples: motors (e.g., "nervous" foot-shaking), yawns, chiches, eye rolls, hair twirling, gum chewing, doodling, playing with "toys," or clock watching. DO NOT WEAR WATCHES IN CLASS. initial_______ 18. NO SIDE SHOWS. This is any communication, verbal or non-verbal, not directed to the class as a whole. Turn cell phones, pagers, computers, and other communication devices off (not just on "quiet mode"). initial_______ 19. NO VIOLENCE IN CLASS. Do not hit anyone, even as a joke. Penalty: permanent dismissal from the course. initial_______ 20. KEEP THE CONTENTS OF THE COURSE CONFIDENTIAL. You may share: (A) Ground Rules, (B) Syllabus, (C) Course Schedule, and (D) 100% Player Agreement. Do not share anything else about the course. Note: The course is not "secret" -- if people want to know about it, tell them to see me. initial_______ 21. MAINTAIN CONFIDENTIALITY of the people in our class. (Be aware: I cannot guarantee that everyone will do this.) initial_______ 22. USE RESPONSIBLE LANGUAGE. I will ask you to replace some of your normal speech patterns with others that imply personal responsibility. initial_______ 23. PRACTICE THE COURSE SKILLS BOTH IN AND OUT OF CLASS. I consider this course to last, full time, for the number of weeks in the term. I particularly want you to see any interaction with me and other coaching team members as an opportunity for practice. initial_______ 24. TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR COMFORT. If any topic, behavior, or language offends you, ask that it be changed. COMMUNICATE ANY COMPLAINTS you have (in class or in life) only to someone who can do something about them. Do not complain to anyone who cannot help solve the problem. Do not receive complaints that you cannot assist with, but direct the person to someone who can. initial_______ 25. COMPLETE THE COURSE EVALUATION in class or after the course ends, as requested. initial_______ I reserve the right to modify the ground rules and syllabus in the direction of leniency. However, I have developed them over several years and many classes; it is unlikely that I will modify them during this term. Ernie Williams |
