The Medici David

The Medici David
You are so young and feminine in your features,
Yet you are courageous and brave with spirit.
You stand on the head of the giant monster
Casting your pure eyes upon his remains.
A form so pure must be cast from above.
Smoothly defined yet so tender and natural.
Your character is held in your presence.
David, you are the glory of a hero.
Let your nudity be evidence for courage
Contrasting with the armor of the Giant,
Who lies beneath your strength of character.
A warrior, yet not yet a grown man.
Let your victory be testimony
To God’s will and grace upon his people.

-- Morgan Mander

My eyes are drawn upwards,
To the face of the victorious warrior
He gazes back at me,
Full of power.
At his feet rest the spoils,
In his hand is the humble tool of success,
The shepherd boy surveys his world,
And wit stands victorious over brutality.
Woe to you,
Mighty Goliath,
That you thought yourself infallible
Joy reigns in the land of Israel,
For humble David has saved God’s nation—
Let future peoples take heed.
