Filippo Brunelleschi (1377-1446) was a pioneer of Italian Renaissance architecture and a talented sculptor, Brunelleschi is also credited with the rediscovery of the principles of linear perspective, which he demonstrated in an experiment involving a mirror and a painting of a street scene. His Duomo of the Florence Cathedral and the Pazzi Chapel are among his significant works.

It's the 4th largest cathedrals in the world.
The octagonal drum carries eight "shells." Empty spaces have been left inside each of these to lighten the massive structure. The angle ribs are not intended to provide structural support. Another notable feature is the external covering system, which consists of tiles specially designed for easy assembly and maintenance.
Many Sculptures in the cathedral were made by many famous artist. See http://www.mega.it/eng/egui/monu/buo.htm
The dome is decorated with frescoes by Vasari and Fredrico
Succari and stained glass windows by Donatell, Andrea del Castagno, Paolo
Uccello, and Lerenzo Ghiberti.
The frescoes included Sir John Hawkwood by Paolo Uccello, Niccolo da Tolentino by Andrea del Castagno, the ones that fought for Florence. Also Dante with a depiction of the Divine Comedy by Domenico di Michelino.
The duomo's interior is about 155m long and 90m wide.
A stairway near the main entrance of the duomo leads to Brunelleschi's tomb.
The marble face in white, green and red was built in the 19th Century in Gothic style to replace the original uncompleted one by Arnolfo di Cambio which was torn down in the 16th Century.
The bell tower was started in 1334 by Giotto and finished by Andrea Pisano and Francesco Talenti. On the first tier carved pictures that represented the Creation of Man and Arts and Industries and was designed by Giotto. The second tier had planets, cardinal virtues, the arts, and seven sacraments. Donatello and others did the sculptures of the Prophets and Sybils. It's 82m high!
