I think that Leonardo was the first modern scientist. It is true that there were people before him who stumbled upon certain scientific discoveries or experimented with certain things. But Leonardo was the first person to try an understand how and why things worked in a scientific way. He was driven to understand the inner workings of things, and he went about his observations and experimentations in a very precise and documented way. This is why I consider him to be the first modern scientist.
