Did we forget Girolamo Savonarola? Probably, but then history did the same. Honestly, who had heard of him until this past Monday? We don't know Savonarola because he failed; he made a grand gesture, he was crushed, and he faded. His reputation could have overcome being burned at the stake if not for the enemies he made; the Medici. The Medici family dominated Florence and the Renaissance, rivaling and often holding the papacy. So powerful was the family that they could largely eliminate Savonarola from memory, even more easily since they also killed most of his followers. We forgot Savonarola because he messed with the wrong people, and was edited out of history. We forgot him because the winners write history, and no matter what happened later, the Medici won.
