Petrarch's love poems may very well ahve contained themes about breaking away from external authority. That is if he truley wrote in order to get people to start thinking for themselves. Back in those times the average person could not read the Bible and was forced to trust the words of priests. Often times these people were lead astray by these priests and perhaps Petrarch wanted them to escape this trap and start becomming dependant on themselves for spiritual liberation.
