I think he was very insecure. I think many people start to doubt themselves when they are rejected by the object of their affection. His compensation: write about Laura whenever he feels really happy or really sad. I also think that he liked to sulk in self-pity a lot, and his infatuation with Laura was partially an excuse to do this. He might have believed that he wrote better when he was depressed. After all, depression goes together with insecurity rather nicely.
