I think if anything Petrarch would have less of a reason to be insecure. If he is used to moving around and changing friends then he should be more comfortable with it and be able to become more secure with himself in the form of meeting new people. He just seems to dramatize everything, like his moment of revelation on the top of the mount, in order to receive attention. I think he is confident, just a bit of a drama queen....or king, whatever.
