I have to agree with Adela; Petrarch was in no way free of external authority. Indeed, he never truly escaped his soul's obsession with the unattainable Laura. The reason is, in my mind, fairly clear--Petrarch didn't want to elude his stalker-like fixation. Laura made his career possible for, without the inspiration derived from her beauty, Petrarch likely wouldn't have composed the Canzoniere which made him famous. In the end, Petrarch's obsession with Laura was all he had, adn he didn't want to erase it.
