I don't think writing poems to try to overcome his obsessive idolization of Laura is a way to free himself from all external authority. Yes, he does use her as a symbol of his own kind of worship, instead of the Virgin Mary as many do, but he does mention his faith in God in the Letter to Posterity and The Ascent to Mount Ventoux. And although she is very beautiful and he's heart-broken by not having her in his possession, he does not separate his life from other things beautiful things found in nature. I think that everyone has had a crush or two, but he just happened to take it much further into the "creepy" level of attraction. If anything, I think his scheme of things is definitely away of personal liberation, but not of external authority, but of emotional contol within himself.
