When I read Petrarch I could sense his pain and longing to regain control of his own soul and emotions from Laura . However, I could also sense his desire and how he longed to be with her. I think that he truly wanted to be able to admire Laura's beauty without being taken captive by it. I don't feel that Petrarch wanted to cast off external authority entirely, I think that he just wanted to be free with in himself . Then he would be able to recognize and even admire external authority without becoming a slave to its powers.
