There are several different reasons the warriors compete in funeral games. They first want to pay homage and show respect to the gods. These people believe their fate lies in the hands of the gods. They thank the gods that they are still living healthy and strong. They need to thank the gods for the good times with Patroklos. They also are showing respect and to the fallen soldier and their friend, Patroklos. He died in a fierce battle, therefore they compete ferociously with all their strength to remember the strength Patroklos exhibited. Of course they have to enjoy themselves to take their minds off missing Patroklos. All these things are involved in giving reason to have the games.
