I don't know if Achilleus would have changed his mind if he had known that Patroklos would have died. During those times the people attributed a lot of what happend on the Gods. They did not feel that they held a lot of choice in what happend. If the Gods wished for something to happen it would happen one way or anoter. If Achilleus thinks the same way as most people of the time than he may think along the same lines and not choose to fight in the battle. He may feel that even if he did go and fight along side Patroklos the Gods' would still have him killed.
