Achilleus does have a strong friendship with Patroklos, and it is this that lets him send Patroklos into battle. He sees in Patroklos a little of himself; and Achilleus also sees the compassion he lacks in himself. He sends Patroklos to battle to encourage the other greeks, but he also wishes his friend to come back.
