When Patroklos tells Achilleus that he wants to fight the Trojans, I believe that Achilleus has a split decision here. On the one hand he wants to helps his friend in any way possible, but on the other he vowed not to fight, and going back on his word would tarnish his honor. So I think Achilleus does something that will keep both feelings in check. He gives Patroklos his entire army to keep him from harm, but remains back so he can still honor his vow.
