I agree with you that Achilleus' staying away from the battle is selfish, especially if he is the one that could put the end to the war and, thus, save many lives. I also understand his resentment toward Agamemnon, but I do not like that Achilleus ignores pleas of his many friends and does not listen to words of wisdom from the elders who tell him to cast away his anger. Achilleus, being a great hero that he is presented as, should fight alongside his friends. Maybe he feels that by going to the battle he will appear as weak and dishonor himself; he has sworn in front of everybody that he would never forgive Agamemnon. However, by punishing Agamemnon in this way he is hurting himself; although indirectly, he allows his friends to die.
