The story I know was that the golden apple was tossed into a wedding by the goddess of Discord and was adressed to the most beautiful woman. So of course Hera, Athene, and Aphrodite fought over it. They went to Paris (who was exiled from Troy at the time and living as a shepherd or something) and told him to chose. Of course the goddesses bribed him. I believe Hera offered to make him king of the world, Athene said she would give him great wisdom, and Aphrodite promised to make the most beautiful woman in the world fall in love with him. Obviously, Paris chose Aphrodite as the most beautiful and that is why Helen fell in love with (Paris - "I'm a lover not a fighter.") him and allowed herself to be abducted. And that's why Hera and Athene are on the side of the Greeks, and Aphrodite is on the side of the Trojans.
