26. The third day was dedicated to religious activities. A procession to the alter, an open air sacrifice, and a banquet for competitors in the morning. Hecatombs were performed on top of the famous Alter of Zeus, regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Alter consisted of a great pile of ash: the remains of sacrificial victims. It is said that, after more than 1500 years of disuse, the ground is still greasy with fat. In the afternoon, a boy's footrace was held. |
