Altar of the twelve Gods

The Greek world was focused around gods. There were twelve main gods known as Olympians:   These gods as well as many other gods lived on  Mount Olympus. The leader of the gods was Zeus, god of the sky. The other 11 gods consisted of  Hera, goddess of marriage, Aphrodite, goddess of love, Apollo, god of the sun, Ares, God of war, Artemis. goddess of nature, Athena, goddess of wisdom and war, Demeter, goddess of grain and harvest, Dionysus, god of wine and pleasure, Hephaestus, god of fire, Hermes, messenger of god and Poseidon, god of the sea.

The altar of the twelve gods was located at the center of the agora. This landmark was used as the determinate for all distances in Athens. In order to please the gods, Greeks citizens made sacrifices. Sacrifices were similar to the Christians praying. Sacrifices included small animals, food or other materials. Typically, one made a sacrifice  when he sought the blessings of the gods in certain situation, ( like the winning of war).
