~Tholos~

The Tholos was known as the control center for the Athenian democracy.

It was a big circular building where the 50 prytaneis ate their meals.

One third of them was expected to be "on call" during their month-long tour of duty and sometimes had to sleep there during emergencies.

The Tholos had 6 interior columns for support of the roof.

There was a small section on the north side that was the kitchen.

It was built around 480 BC.

A few of the original state property that has been found.

It has DE scratched into it which stand for DEMOSION, or public property.  This was probably to prevent the prytaneis from stealing it.
